REVIEWS:

Attic Base’s New World View is really two albums in one, each with their separate styles. The male-vocal dominated tracks such as “Frozen”, “Define Yourself” and “Love Denied” are a direct extension of the 80’s-era Depeche Mode. In fact, in homage to them, Attic Base sings a very nice cover of “Photographic”. Mike Burton sings and sounds just like a brother of Dave Gahan with emotional, whispering and raw vocals with a hint of English accent. If your Depeche Mode itch hasn’t been scratched, these tracks do an acceptable job of scratching it.
Where New World View really shines is on the more modern and unique styling of Melissa Mello’s female vocal tracks. These more pop/ electronica influence tracks are more comparable to such modern bands as Shiny Toy Guns. “Martini Dreams” and “Oh My My” are a hauntingly fun romps with nice medium beats and easy hooks. The album’s title track is a synth-heavy repetitive ride with great transitions and breaks.
“Satellite” starts out with a blast of vocals and very limited background music that really lets you focus on Melissa’s pleasant and soothing vocals. “Last Flight Out”, which is my favorite song on the album, grabs you right away with the funky beats, bass line and breakbeat-style rhythms. “Writing on the Wall” gives you a bit more of a climbing beat and you will find yourself singing along with it very quickly.
The aptly-named ending track “Hypnotic” is a great ending to this fine album. With its repetitive drum-heavy opening to its use of clichés in its chorus and ending with a whirlpool that drags you into its depths, it’s a fine ending to a solid album.
